The Red Clay Music Foundry offers instruction for piano for all ages, all levels and all styles of music. We have teachers who specialize in classical, jazz, rock, pop and more. You will find teachers at our school who teach 4 year to 80 year old students and can accommodate beginners to advanced players.
Here are some tips regarding piano lessons for beginners.
The piano is probably the best all round instrument for anyone new to music lessons. It is the easiest instrument to get a tone out of. The layout of the instrument makes it easy to see the relationships of notes and how scales and chords are constructed. This is important when understanding music theory for example.¬† You can play both melody and harmonies on the piano and so much more. If you do not already own a piano, we recommend that you look into a lease/purchase plan. Most piano companies offer this as an option. You can get a piano on a lease/purchase plan for less money than buying a keyboard and have a better instrument to learn on. Digital pianos that simulate the real feel of a piano can also be a good choice. Five years of age is the youngest age that we recommend for starting private piano lessons.

We encourage new students¬†to take a 30 minute trial lesson. You can meet the teacher and learn more about our school. Currently, we are offering the trial lessons for $20 (one per student).

Dr. Angela Barker has a background in music education with a Bachelor of Music Education from Shorter University in Rome, Georgia; a Master of Music in Music Education from Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin; and a PhD in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. She received her Kod√°ly certification from the University of North Texas and Silver Lake College. Her teaching experience includes early childhood music classes for children, ages 6 months to 5 years; general and choral music at elementary schools in Texas and Virginia; and graduate and undergraduate courses in music education at the University of Oklahoma, Georgia State University, Silver Lake College, and Boston University. She has directed numerous children‚Äôs choirs and is currently Director of Children‚Äôs Choirs at Parkway Baptist Church in Duluth/Johns Creek. Dr. Barker has taught both private and group lessons for young pianists, and works especially hard to ensure that the pace and focus of each lesson leads the student to experience music in positive and meaningful ways. Weekly lessons are geared toward making learning fun and interactive with the goal of helping each student develop a lifelong enjoyment of music and playing the piano.
Kiea is a classically trained vocalist and instructor from Virginia who has performed in a multitude of styles and settings ranging from masterwork choir ensembles and solo recitals to traditional gospel groups and open mics. As an instructor, she has a passion for technique, strength, and beauty in the voice while maintaining a dedication to honest self expression through song. Having worked quite extensively with children, she has a love for the arts and their ability to teach healthy forms of discipline and perseverance, along with the arts’ ability to bring people together in true joy.
Mellissa Fowler‚Äôs journey with music began at an early age singing with her grandmother and in church.¬† After getting involved in choir and musical theater in high school she decided this was what she wanted to pursue as a career.¬† While attending Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA, she was afforded the opportunity to travel abroad with a gospel choir for missions. Her love of theater grew as well and she played various lead roles in the spring musicals and directed the fall One Act Festival her Junior and Senior year. Mel received her Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance and Bachelor of Music education in 2001 and 2003.¬† After completing her degrees, she taught high school and middle school chorus and drama for several years before taking a different direction with her music.¬† She became a missionary and full time worship leader at the International House of Prayer in Atlanta as well as teaching private voice and piano lessons.¬† After transitioning to the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, MO, in 2010, Mel became voice faculty for Forerunner Music Academy at IHOPU (International House of Prayer University).¬† There she helped write and establish their current vocal curriculum which is used school wide.¬† Mel‚Äôs passion is to see her students find their true unique voice and enjoy the process.¬† Although classically trained, Mel teaches both traditional and modern styles while staying rooted in sound technique.
For one hour every day, two-year-old Ashley would sit at the piano composing her own little melodies. By age four, she was excelling in viola and piano lessons, thanks to the renowned Suzuki teaching method, which Ashley now uses as the basis for instructing her students. At the esteemed Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Ashley flourished under the guidance of pianist Edmund Battersby, violist Atar Arad, and violin pedagogue Dr. Brenda Brenner. However, while practicing eight hours a day at a summer music festival, Ashley acquired an injury which caused her to take a year off college. Unable to play instruments, Ashley discovered her love for songwriting, and continued to develop as a singer. Having studied classical voice earlier in life, she now branched out in styles ranging from jazz to pop. As she recovered her ability to play her instruments again, she also began arranging and performing music in a variety of styles for piano, violin, and viola. Ashley finished her degree in piano performance at the University of Nebraska‚Äď Lincoln, studying piano with Dr. Paul Barnes and viola with the Chiara Quartet.¬† Her musical journey didn‚Äôt end there; in January 2017, Ashley released ‚ÄúAs Far As I Run‚ÄĚ, her debut singer/songwriter album. In re-locating to Atlanta, Ashley is excited to boldly step into a new music scene as a committed teacher and performer.
Ashley has a deep love for music and the power that it has to change people. Her passion is to engage students in fun and meaningful ways and challenge students according to what uniquely motivates them. Christine Howe studied under Pitagoras Goncalves at Pensacola Christian College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Ministries with a piano concentration. Ms. Howe also plays the violin and has been a member of the PCC Symphony Orchestra and the Gwinnett Community Symphony Orchestra. She is a multi-instrumentalist and plays cello, and woodwinds as well. Ms. Howe has been a choir director in Pensacola Florida and a Middle School and High School Band Director at Suwanee Christian School in Buford Ga. She caters to all ages and enjoys teaching many styles of music and accomplishing the students‚Äô ¬†goals while encouraging them to have fun.
George began studying piano at the age of five from a retired Juilliard faculty member who considered George a child prodigy. After moving to Atlanta in 1965 he began studies with Dr. Oliver Herbert Atlanta‚Äôs former president of the Piano Teachers Guild.George placed 2nd in the Georgia National Piano Competition at age 14. George was a performance major at Georgia State University where he studied with Dr. Ruth McDonald , Dr. Cary Lewis, Dr. Geoff Hayden, and Ted Howe jazz legend and premier instructor of jazz studies at GSU. George recorded and toured for Electra recording artist Peabo Bryson, was invited to perform twice for the Prince and Princess of Brunei during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was musical director of Atlanta‚Äôs premier comedy troupe ‚ÄėThe Wits End Players,‚Äô keyboardist for Atlanta‚Äôs Rupert Orchestra, & continues to play professionally in the Atlanta area.
George‚Äôs goal is to facilitate the student in finding their inner musical voice as well as developing their technique to express that voice through their instrument. He believes the student should have a balance of materials that keep it interesting for them and that productively challenges their development. George is accomplished at a multitude of styles all of which he teaches from Classical to Popular to Jazz.
Selena Wade is a classically trained pianist who was born in Augusta, GA. She started playing piano, singing and acting at the tender age of 5. She graduated from the prestige High School of Music and Art (based upon the movie ‚ÄúFame‚ÄĚ); currently, known as LaGuardia in New York City. Selena appeared in numerous Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in New York City and at the National Black Theatre of Harlem. Selena has musically directed and sang with many R&B groups; Gospel choirs (also, other genres); appeared in several commercials; taught piano and, vocally coached many children and kids auditions for college. Selena performed extra work in ‚ÄúNew York Undercover‚ÄĚ and had the opportunity to sing background for Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden and Jones Beach Theatre in New York City. Selena has a Theatre Arts degree from Cheyney University in Cheyney, PA and a Master‚Äôs of Science degree in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.

A native of Baton Rouge, LA, Kim grew up 45 minutes north of New Orleans and her childhood musical experiences have been a positive influence on the way she approaches and interacts through music. Kim sang her first public vocal performance at age 5 and started piano lessons at age 7. She has over 21 years professional experience as a performing and recording vocalist, lyricist and songwriter. She has sung as lead vocalist and/or background vocalist, nationally and internationally, in several r&b, jazz, and rock bands featured at festivals, clubs, theaters, cruises, workshops, private and corporate events.
Kim and her husband, Steve (guitarist/composer/producer), co-founded their original soul/rock/jazz fusion band called Days Ahead, and they wrote, recorded and released their debut cd Turning Point to glowing reviews and award nominations. Kim tours the US and Europe, and has toured South Africa, performing as well as presenting music clinics. Kim & her band have also been featured live on several broadcast networks and their music can be heard and purchased through their official website, www.daysaheadmusic.com, or iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify. Kim has over 11 years experience teaching vocal and piano lessons to ages 7 to 67. She enjoys teaching contemporary styles of music; jazz, pop, r&b, rock, gospel, and country. She also has a special place in her heart for teaching those children or adults with learning and developmental disabilities. Her educational and performance background as a Counselor and Musician, using Music as Therapy, includes working with students with Autism and ADHD as well as using breath-work and Vocal Toning for musicians’ health and well-being.
