For any musician, whether you are a hobbyist or a professional, songwriting can be a key component to your success. It can aid in self expression, intellectual growth, or even a long-lasting, profitable career. Learning the basic elements of a song and it’s structure will benefit artists of all ages and levels. Gwinnett School of Music at Red Clay Music Foundry now offers an integrated class to assist you in your journey.
What to Expect
Songwriting or composing music in general, can be a daunting task. In addition to writing lyrics, the melody, rhythm and dynamics all must be considered. This, for most, seems overwhelming. Our method will walk you through, step by step, the most efficient process to creating your masterpiece(s). For beginners, the class will focus on structure, genre, chord progression, lyrics, and so on. The instructor, Elgin Wells is a seasoned professional, and will cover just about everything you need to know.
The curriculum includes every aspect of songwriting, divided into 8 week sessions. Not only will the group be covering composition, but will also educate you on the business and marketing side of music. To promote, and sell your music is an imperative part of being successful. For further motivation in pursuing your efforts, there will even be special guest appearances!
Do I Belong Here?
Anyone who has ever been intrigued by, or attempted songwriting or composing music can benefit from this class. Do you have to be a musician? No. Do you have to have any prior musical ability at all? No. Even if you just have an interest and are curious to see if you would enjoy composition, you can benefit from this class. The lessons are the perfect opportunity to point an aspiring artist in the right direction. All bases are covered to help you pinpoint your forte.
Any musician or writer, at one point or another, stumbles upon, what most refer to as â€śwriterâ€™s blockâ€ť. The program is perfect for giving a musician who is in a rut or plateau the inspiration needed to progress! Even intermediate/advanced participants are more than welcome to participate. The constructive criticism and bouncing of ideas is perfect for fueling your creative energy.
Maybe youâ€™re not actually interested in writing music, but are intrigued by the business side of the industry. Thatâ€™s okay too! Production and promotion are just as important, and you can hone listening skills to be able to hear the intricacies of every song and how it could be improved. During the course of 8 weeks, youâ€™ll be working alongside many â€śveteransâ€ť that are very familiar with the industry.
Aside from the artistic gains, itâ€™s a great social, extracurricular activity with many benefits. If youâ€™re interested in enrolling your child, youâ€™ll be pleased to know that this could even help with his/her performance in school. Did you know that statistically, a higher percentile of children involved in social learning programs (especially music) outside of school have higher grades? Elgin Wells, the Instructor
This Atlanta based, highly acclaimed musician, has a long list of achievements. These range from 40 years of award-winning musical accomplishments, to receiving a degree in psychology from Georgia State University. Elgin has been with a number of bands, orchestras, and has even produced hundreds of recordings. This includes himself, as well as other seasoned musicians. Elgin has also professionally performed with 23 different instruments, in almost every genre. Jazz, Orchestral, Bluegrass, Blues, Rock, Country, you name it. His diversity ultimately led him to be a six time Billboard Songwriting Contest Award Winner. Even now, Wells still retains an audio/video studio.
